São Miguel has no shortage of viewpoints, but some stand out more than others. Whether you’re chasing that classic postcard shot of a crater lake or just want a quiet spot to take in the island, these are the five I’d point you to first. One thing to keep in mind before you head out: Azorean weather can shift fast, and a viewpoint that’s clear in the morning might be fogged in by noon, so it’s worth checking conditions before you go so you don’t waste a trip. I grew up in the Azores, so these aren’t just the ones that show up on every list online, they’re the ones actually worth the stop.
Vista do Rei Viewpoint

To get the best chances of a perfect view over Lagoa do Fogo, visit this viewpoint in the morning due to the high probability of fog during the day.

Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint
Ponta da Madrugada viewpoint is situated on the east side of São Miguel and is considered one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the island. From there you get a beautiful view over the hills of the east side and the Atlantic Ocean. To get here, it’s better and easier to rent a car, because with public transportation it can take up to 4 hours from Ponta Delgada, while with your own car it takes about 1 hour.

Azores is one of the best destinations for canyoning due to its immense and abundant waterfalls. São Miguel counts dozens of waterfalls, making it one of the best places to experience this activity. Canyoning can be done in groups or privately, and is divided into 3 tiers of difficulty, taking from a couple of hours to half or a full day. It’s the perfect activity if you’re looking for adrenaline and adventure.
