ELTIAS for Portugal & Azores: Everything US & Canadian Travelers Need to Know

If you’re travelling to Portugal from the United States or Canada, there’s one new requirement you’ll need to be aware of before your trip. ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System is becoming mandatory for American and Canadian visitors entering Portugal and the wider Schengen Area, with the system expected to come into effect in the last quarter of 2026. The good news is that it’s a straightforward process. Everything you need to know about what ETIAS is and how to apply is covered in this article.

What is ETIAS?

etias

ETIAS is a new entry requirement for anyone travelling to Portugal, including those flying directly from the United States or Canada to the Azores. In total, 30 European countries are part of the system, the full list can be found on the official EU website here: European countries requiring ETIAS.

The authorisation is linked to your passport and can be applied for through the same website linked above. The cost is €20 per application and, under normal circumstances, a decision is communicated to you by email within up to 4 days.

Once approved, ETIAS is valid for three years and entitles you to stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across Europe.

When you arrive at a Portuguese airport, make sure you have your ETIAS confirmation documentation with you, as it may be requested at border control.

Why do US and Canadian Citizens Need ETIAS for Portugal & Azores?

The United States and Canada are among a group of countries whose citizens can enter Europe without a traditional visa. ETIAS is not a visa, it is a pre-travel authorisation system introduced by the European Union to strengthen border security and better manage who is entering the Schengen Area. Think of it as a background check that happens before you travel, rather than at the border. Most travellers will be approved quickly and without any issues. The EU introduced similar systems already in place in other countries, such as the ESTA in the United States itself or the ETA in Canada, so the concept is nothing new.
